How to Print Color on a Teacher’s Budget

Ready for this amazing trick that I’ve been using for the past few years.  It’s seriously amazing and it’s going to change your life.  This quick blog post will tell you how.  Keep on reading!

Once I started taking my Teachers pay Teachers seriously and wanted to print all of my resources in color at home without having to secretly print them at school, I knew I had to figure out how to print color at home for CHEAP!

I mean, come on, I already spend enough on my classroom and I don’t have a million bucks to spend on ink cartridges.  I was using multiple cartridges a year just to print the resources I needed so they looked nice for my students.

That’s when I heard about:

HP INSTANT INK!

This program has seriously changed my life and my printing! ????  I was so excited to get my printer.
The program is simple.
  1. Buy or use an HP Printer that is instant ink compatible.
  2. Sign up for instant ink.
  3. Have ink cartridges sent to your house and pay a monthly fee.
That’s it!  So easy!

Tips & Tricks

Pick Your Printer

Make sure your printer is instant ink compatible.  I bought the OfficeJet 5741.  It came with a full year of instant ink for FREE! My printer is no longer available Prime on Amazon, but they range from $50-$300.
Check out this one on Amazon: HP Office Jet Pro 6968, it’s very similar to mine.  Click >>HERE<< or on the image below.  I love this printer because it’s wireless, I can print, copy and scan, it can print double-sided and it’s relatively small.

Pick Your Plan

HP has monthly plans ranging from $2.99 (50 pages a month) to $9.99 (300 pages a month).  I use the $4.99 plan with 100 pages a month and that’s sufficient for me, but for $5 more you can get 300 pages a month!  That’s a ton of printing!
Think about it though, when you go to Office Max or Staples you are spending $60 for a black and color cartridge each time you go.  Before instant ink, that was every 4-5 months.  That’s up to $180 a year.  You can spend $60 for the year and get cartridges sent to your home.

Know What You’re Signing Up For

Make sure you read the fine print and make sure you know exactly what you’re signing up for.  I love Instant Ink, but others may not.  You can learn more about it by clicking >>HERE<<.
Instant ink connects to your printer and monitors the number of pages you print.  When it notices that your cartridges are almost out, it sends you new ones even before you need them.  Some people may not like that HP is monitoring the pages you print, but if they want to use my teaching resources, go for it. ????
